The UK Government has announced the decision to approve funding via the NHS for Microprocessor Controlled Prosthetic Knees. The policy means that hundreds of amputees living in England with above knee limb loss could have access to a life changing Microprocessor Controlled Prosthetic Knee (MPK) via the NHS.
The Clinical Commissioning Policy regulates the NHS provision of prosthetic knee components and this decision marks the beginning of the implementation of a policy change for MPKs. As such, MPKs will now be funded through Specialised Commissioning by NHS England and will soon be available through Rehabilitation Service Centres to amputees who meet the criteria set out in the policy.
With hundreds of amputees living in England with above knee limb loss and hip disarticulation, this decision is envisaged to help improve the quality of limb loss rehabilitation for above knee amputees.
There are a variety of specialised MPKs available for amputees to choose from, all designed to help amputees walk with a stable and efficient gait, whilst at the same time reducing the likelihood of stumbles and falls. The Plié® 3 Microprocessor Controlled Knee by Freedom Innovations is the fastest MPK, responding 10 to 20 times more rapidly than other MPKs. With the most responsive stumble and fall protection, users can instinctively move at their own pace in any direction…even if it’s taking small short steps or pivoting in confined spaces.
The Rapid Response technology in the Plié 3 delivers a more natural transition from swing to stance. Resistance is based on swing flexion, not speed, resulting in an instinctive action that feels more natural and ultimately reduces the amount of effort and energy used by the amputee.
The Plié 3 is also fully submersible and provides protection from water, to a depth of 1m for up to 30 minutes, thus allowing users to get back into water activities that they may have been unable to do with other prosthetic legs.
This new decision has been a long time in the making, however, with the funding now available it gives new hope to those living with limb loss and ultimately will help to improve their quality of life with the help of the latest prosthetic technology.
